How do I prepare my autistic child for school?

Updated: Mar 25, 2021

Your child will have many social interactions on a daily basis while at school. There will be dozens of people your child can interact with and they will most likely bond to people that have shared interests, same hobbies, and like doing the same activity.

Overview:

  • What a healthy relationship looks like with friends

  • What a healthy relationship looks like with a teacher

  • What your child can do during school breaks

What a healthy relationship with friends looks like

Healthy friendships that other children will have with your child will understand that:

  • Your child will have additional needs

  • Understands your child has involuntary behaviours

  • Can tell when your child is starting to get stressed out and needs to have some space

  • Speak up on your child's behalf

What a healthy relationship with a teacher looks like When coming to school the person who will most understand your child will be the teachers. Teachers have training and practice but however, each child varies so it is best to establish a great relationship with your child to the teacher.

The sooner your child's teachers understand the needs of your child the sooner they can begin to support them and challenge your child in ways to benefit them.

Building a relationship with your teacher for your child is as easy as taking the time to talk about your child where you can to them. You should take the time to talk about the following:

  • Your child strengths

  • Interests

  • Challenges your child faces

  • Things your teacher needs to expect when teaching

What your child can do during school breaks

Autistic children like to feel in control and prefer structure. Free time at school can be a challenge due to the activities that happen during breaks can change daily.

Although it is good that your child is getting used to the idea of having less structure it is more important that they feel comfortable during school which can be a very stressful place.

It is encouraged that your child takes up a certain hobby that they can do in school for example reading books at the library. Many schools have lunchtime clubs that engage in multiple different activities.
